People turned away from God (sin), and the world became messed up.  People could no longer live forever, their lives became very hard, they treated each other badly, many people were left alone and hurting, and many children became orphans.
 
When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.  Romans 5:12 (NLT)
